Maurice E. Libson

 Maurice E. Libson of North Haven, CT, architect, artist and founder of the firm Designer for Business and Industry passed away on May 30, 2013, at age 94. His professional accomplishments include designing the corporate headquarters of The New Haven Water Company (now ACES) and many shops and stores on Chapel Street, New Haven.  In addition, he consulted for Sikorsky Aircraft.  Libson also designed products and graphics for a number of well-known firms, including designing the first portable dictating machine. In his later years, Libson taught at the Paier College of Art. An accomplished water colorist, his focus was New England seascapes and landscapes. A man of many interests, his hobbies included flying, photography and gardening.  As a pilot, he was an avid supporter of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 27 for many years.   A founder of Temple Emanuel in Orange; he was its third president. He was also involved in community matters, having served on the Library Board and The Clean Energy Commission of the Town of North Haven. After graduating from Hillhouse High School in 1936, he entered Yale University. While at Yale he was the recipient of several awards, including the John Ferguson Weir Scholarship and the Ecole des Beaux Arts Medal. He graduated from Yale in 1941 and continued at the Yale School of Architecture in 1942. Maury was born in New Haven on January 2, 1919 to Pauline and Jacob Libson. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ethel Fabricant Libson, a son, Jeffrey Libson of Bryn Mawr PA, a daughter Nancy Libson, of Washington, DC, a daughter-in-law, Christian Libson, and four wonderful grandchildren.
   A memorial service celebrating Maury’s life will be held on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Temple Emanuel, 150 Derby Avenue, Orange, CT.  A reception at the synagogue will follow the service.  Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Experimental Aircraft Association – Chapter 27, Meriden-Markham Airport, 213 Evansville Ave, Meriden, CT 06451.
