Sheldon Levine, 87, of New Haven, passed away peacefully at CT Hospice in Branford March 5, 2009. He was the beloved husband of 60 years of the late Irene Levine. He is survived by his sons and daughters–in-law; Howard & Laurie Levine of Valencia, CA. and Paul & Chris Levine of Boulder, CO. Sheldon had three grandchildren; Kimberly Larson, Nicole Gottlieb, and Jesse Levine, in addition to four great grandchildren; Allie, Benjamin, Sydney, and Ivy. Sheldon was a lifelong resident of New Haven, the son of Abraham & Eva Levine. Shortly after graduating from Hillhouse High School he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. During World War II he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was on the flight crew of over 160 combat missions over India, China, and Burma, and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and 5 Clusters Air Medal and credited with 475 combat hours. Sheldon and his father owned and operated the New England Public Market. He was also an accomplished musician, playing saxophone in several bands including the renowned Earl Peck Orchestra. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, March 6, at 1: PM at the Bikur Cholim – Sheveth Achim Cemetery, Brocket Place, East Haven. Memorial contributions in Sheldon’s memory may be sent to CT.
