Rhoda Cahn

Rhoda Lipofsky Cahn died December 8, 2009 at the age of 87. She was a much beloved mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend. She believed in social change and social justice and put much energy into causes supporting peace and equality. She worked as a school psychologist in Milford, CT., having developed a special education program for gifted children. She encouraged curiosity and exploration. A great believer in the creative process, she served as a coordinator for the Arts Festival on the Green in the 1960’s. Rhoda was married for over thirty years to William Cahn who she has described as my “husband, a writer, painter, photographer and athlete who provided limericks and other comedy routines”. She assisted her husband in writing two children’s books, “The Story of Writing from Cave Art to Computer” and “No Time For School – No Time For Play”, about child labor. After retirement, she enjoyed writing poetry and her memoirs of growing up She was born in 1922 to Gertrude and Isadore Lipofsky of New Haven. She was the mother of Susan Krieger of San Francisco, CA, Kathe Morse of Wilmington, DE., Sister to Dr. Herbert Lewis of Branford and Mona Rabineau of Southwest Harbor, ME., grandmother of Rachel, Julia and Beth Morse and Friedrich Ebede. She was predeceased by her husband William Cahn in 1976 and a son Daniel Cahn in 1986. She was a woman of principle who fought for the underdog and was not afraid to voice her opinion on subjects she felt were important. She was a force of life and will be greatly missed. Graveside funeral service will be held 11: AM Monday, Dec. 14, 2009 at the Mishkan Israel Cemetery, Jewell St., New Haven. A reception will follow at Whitney Center, 200 Leeder Hill Dr., Hamden, CT.
