Marcia Mersey

Marcia Mersey of 200 Leader Hill Rd., Hamden, CT died August 31, 2018. She was born in Boston Massachusetts in 1918.  Her parents, Morris and Sadie Korzenowitz, came to the US from Eastern Europe.

Marcia grew up with her brother Sidney and sister Evelyn in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston, on Pinckney Street, near Louisburg Square. She lived an active childhood, helping to serve ice cream cones in her parent’s general store, and got to see everything that Boston had to offer, from Red Sox games at Fenway Park to Serge Koussevitzky conducting the Boston Symphony.

After Simmons College of business, Marcia moved to New York City, working as a paralegal in a major law firm. When she married David Mersey, they moved to Hamden. For many years they enjoyed The Schubert Theater, musical performances at Yale, and the Met Opera.  David founded his own business in 1954 and continued to actively work for several decades. Later Marcia volunteered at The New Haven Historical Society.

Marcia’s son Ezra attended Hamden Hall and Putnam Avenue schools, later graduating from Duke and Princeton Universities. Ezra and his wife Carol, a classical musician and singer, who trained at Eastman Conservatory and Mannes College, now live in San Francisco.

Marcia retired to Whitney Center 20 years ago, where she made many new and special friendships with the residents and her wonderful helpers. She loved living at Whitney Center and enjoyed participating in the rich cultural life and interesting events the center offered, and was one of the longest tenured residents. The views over the Hamden reservoir from Marcia’s apartment, the changing light in the trees during the seasons, and the wild turkeys roaming the backyard made some wonderful memories, along with all the special people she knew.
