Obituary

Dr. Adrian M. Ostfeld died January 28, 2011 at Whitney Center in Hamden, CT. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1926, served in the Navy from 1944-46 and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1947.  He earned his medical degree from the same University in 1951. Dr. Ostfeld trained at Barnes Hospital in St Louis and the Cornell-New York Hospital Medical Center. His research training was also conducted at the latter institution and at the University of Illinois Medical School where he rose from Assistant Professor to Department Head in 9 years. He retired after 25 years as the Anna M. Lauder Professor of Epidemiology Public Health and Internal Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine. Ostfeld was internationally known for his research on the epidemiology of coronary heart disease, stroke, and aging, and was head of the Yale Health and Aging Project. He was an editor of 8 professional journals, 10 books and 240 papers. In 1987 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences. After retirement he took great pleasure in writing poetry, archiving his vast Indian artifact collection and in teaching Adult Education classes. Surviving him are his wife of 60 years, Ruth Vogel Ostfeld, three children, Cantor Barbara Ostfeld, Dr. Richard Ostfeld and Robin Ostfeld, their respective spouses, Todd Joseph, Dr. Felicia Keesing and Lou Johns, 6 grandchildren, Jordana, Sharon, Aleza, Aminy, Jacob and Benjamin, his sister, Valerie Wall and brother, Alex Ostfeld. His oldest grandchild, Lisa, died in 1998 at age 15.

A memorial service will be held for Dr. Ostfeld at Congregation Mishkan Israel, 785 Ridge Rd. Hamden, Sunday afternoon at 1PM. Shiva will be observed at the Ostfeld apartment, 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden, apartment 221, Sunday from 3PM to 7PM. No flowers, please. Contributions may be made in Dr. Ostfeld's memory to Defenders of Wildlife (savewolves.org) or to Native American Heritage Association (naha-inc.org).
