Obituary

Allan E. Cooper, 81, of Wallingford passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Masonicare Healthcare Center. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rachelle, and his children, Miriam (Carlie Duval) and Noah, and predeceased by his parents, as well as by several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Allan was born in New Haven and grew up in a close family of New Haveners. In the 1960s, he made use of his fluency in Spanish when he helped settle the first wave of Cuban immigrants to the United States. He transitioned in 1970 to the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF), where he was a social worker for 27 years. He had several assignments while at DCF, but the one he enjoyed most was doing evaluations of prospective adoptive parents, several of whom became close family friends.

Allan was a vinyl collector and built an extensive stereo system in the family living room. He loved all genres of music, and could frequently be heard singing all over the house. He loved to tell jokes (both good and bad) and was an animal lover, with a particular fondness for dogs. As an avid amateur radio operator, he enjoyed speaking to people all over the world.

Arrangements provided by Weller Funeral Home. A graveside service will take place on Thursday, August 17, at 11:00 AM at Mishkan Israel Cemetery in New Haven. Mourning will be held in private. Memorial contributions can be made to Masonic Charity Foundation, PO Box 70, Wallingford, CT 06492.
