Obituary



Gladys Katz Field, 88 of 35 Hamden Hills Dr., Hamden died September 23, 2009. Born in 1921 in New York City, Gladys was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lottie (Kaminsky) Katz.

Gladys was raised in NYC and graduated from Hunter High School in 1938 and Hunter College in 1942.  During WWII she worked as a mathematician at Ft. Monmouth, NJ, where she met her husband of 45 years, Dr. Norman J Field, a physicist and educator. They married in 1946 and settled in Tinton Falls (then New Shrewsbury), NJ. She enjoyed reading, opera, sewing, and investing, and supervised the summer youth arts & crafts program in Tinton Falls for several years. She studied and worked briefly as a computer programmer.  She was an active member and multiple office-holder of the Friends of the Monmouth County (NJ) Library Association. Gladys moved to Hamden, CT in 2001, where she resided until the time of her death. She leaves her brother Dr. Robert Katz of Lincoln, NE;  daughter Joan Lakin and her husband Alan of Hamden, daughter Elaine Field of Wilmington, DE;  son Ken Field and his wife Karen Aqua of Cambridge, MA;  son Richard Field of Cliffside Park and Tinton Falls, NJ; grandchildren Sara Ruggiero and her husband Chris, and Brian Lakin and his wife Michelle of Hamden;  great grandchildren Shayna Lakin, Jacob Lakin, Aaron Lakin, and Jack Ruggiero, all of Hamden.

Graveside funeral service will be held at the Cong. B'nai Israel Cemetery, Tinton Falls, NJ Friday at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (multiplemyeloma.org), the Nature Conservancy (nature.org), or Mogen David Adom (afmda.org).
