Obituary

Lawrence (Larry) Irving Prince, 83, of Hamden, Connecticut passed away peacefully on Monday, July 11th, surrounded by his loving family and friends, after a long illness.  Larry was born on May 3rd, 1933 to Estelle (Saltser) Prince and Burton Lawrence Prince in Hartford, Connecticut. He married Marjorie (Kliger) Prince on January 26th, 1958.  They enjoyed eating Chinese food, going to double features, summer trips to Maine and spending time with family and friends for 58 years. Larry attended the University of Bridgeport and obtained his BS in Mechanical Engineering.  He served in the Air Force Reserve. He was employed at Sikorsky Aircraft and at PerkinElmer Inc., where he was part of the team that developed the Hubble telescope.  He also taught computer science and was an Assistant Administrator in the Grants Department for many years at Southern Connecticut State University.  Larry was a mentor to many young people, even after his retirement. Larry had many and varied hobbies and interests.  He enjoyed playing chess and could be found on the New Haven Green playing with friends and strangers alike.  He was an avid photographer and was especially talented at capturing the essence of his subjects in his pictures.  He and his cameras were a constant presence at family events.  Larry also enjoyed woodworking and had a workshop in addition to a darkroom in his home.  He was a voracious reader, keeping up with world events and minutia and always had an article to share. Larry had a special sense of humor; he was quick with a pun, a tease, or a moan-invoking joke. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughter Bari Prince of Southborough, Massachusetts, daughter Stacey Prince and her spouse Teri Mayo of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren Adena Lee Modestow and Chase Edward Modestow.  He was predeceased by his brother, Stephen Prince.
Funeral service at the Mishkan Israel Cemetery Chapel, 701 Whalley Ave., New Haven (in the Westville section of New Haven), Thursday afternoon at 2:30 pm.
