Marjorie Clough Shapiro of Silver Pond, Wallingford and previously Deerfield Drive, Hamden, died peacefully in her sleep on August 3, 2011. Born on May 26, 1920 in Hazel Grove, U.K. to the late George Clough and Vina Howarth Clough Rust. Devoted wife of Bernard Louis Shapiro from 1945 to his passing in 1996. Loving mother of Lynne Shapiro of New Haven, CT, David and Kathy Shapiro of Stamford, CT, Gary and Margaret Shapiro of North Granby, CT and grandmother of Marisa and Jay Rizzo of Newtown, CT, Jesse and Katie Shapiro of Boston, MA and Allie Shapiro of Stamford, CT. Predeceased by brother, David Clough, who died in WWII RAF service. Marjorie attended Derby College near her hometown of Burton-on-Trent U.K. until her World War II service as nurse at Derby Hospital and bookkeeper at Vickers Armstrong and Ministry of Supply. She later was Personal Assistant to Theatrical Agent, Hyman Zahl, until she immigrated to the United States in 1946. Marjorie was then an officer and bookkeeper of two family businesses-Jack and Jill Children's Store, Chapel Street, New Haven in which she also was a part-time manager and Bernard's Fashions for Ladies, Glastonbury. From 1980 to 1990, Marjorie was a full-time volunteer at the CT Better Business Bureau—a customer service representative while helping to administer the Automobile "Lemon Law" program. In West Haven, CT, Marjorie was a founding member and officer of the B'Nai Brith.Women. Most recently she pitched in for the British Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association. Her many friends at "the British Club" and Silver Pond will miss her as "good egg" and great and learned conversationalist. Marjorie especially had a life long love of reading and until she died read at least one book a day and four daily newspapers. Funeral service at the Weller Funeral Home, 493 Whitney Ave., New Haven Friday morning at 11. The interment will be in the B'nai Jacob Memorial Park, Wintergreen Ave., New Haven.
