Martin Hamerman of Orange, CT, founding partner of accounting firm Beers, Hamerman and Company, died Tuesday after an eight month illness. He was 87.  Martin was a fixture of the New Haven community since moving to the area in 1955.  Beyond founding the accounting firm of Beers, Hamerman and Company in 1962, and from which he retired in 1987, he was involved in his home town of Orange, serving on the Board of Finance and on the Building Committee of the Case Memorial Library.  He was an active supporter of Yale's International Student Center, and an avid member of the Yale Fly Fishing Club.  Martin's love of nature and the outdoors began during his childhood in the Bronx, when he joined the Boy Scouts.  Spending his summers at various camps in upstate New York and Canada, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout.  In later years he continued to canoe and fish in the woods of Maine, introducing his two sons and four grandchildren to the joys of the outdoors. He traveled as well to Labrador and Alberta, Canada, and Utah on fly fishing trips; and further abroad with his wife, Wilda, to Spain, Turkey, Japan, China, Russia, Germany, France, England, Italy and Israel. Domestically, he traveled frequently to New York City where, for many years, he and his wife, Wilda, were regular ticket holders of The Metropolitan Opera. In 1982, with no prior running experience, he trained for and completed the New York City Marathon. Upon retirement, Martin began a 20 year relationship as a volunteer with Yale's Peabody Museum, working in the Department of Entymology. The son of Louis and Gertrude Hamerman, Martin was born in Bronx, NY, on December 9th, 1923.  After graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School, he enrolled at The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, from which he graduated in 1947. His schooling was interrupted by a stint in the Army in World War II, where he served as a Corporal in the weather service, stationed in Greece and Italy. Martin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wilda Slevin Hamerman, two sons, Donald Hamerman of Stamford, CT and Paul Hamerman of Midlothian, VA, his sister Jean Firestone of New York City, and four grandchildren.
