Dr. Robert N. Margolis of Woodbridge, CT died September 21, 2011 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife Joan S. Margolis, three sons, David, Joseph and Tom and two step daughters, Allison Noel and Valerie Waskow and seven grandchildren. Dr. Margolis was predeceased by his first wife, Irene Lobenthal in 1972 and his step son, Mark Noel in 1984. Dr. Margolis was born in Hartford in 1933 and attended the Loomis-Chaffee School, Harvard College and Tufts School of Medicine. After graduation he trained in orthopaedic surgery at Yale and entered practice in New Haven in 1965. From 1960-62 he served as Battle Group Surgeon with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy or Orthopaedic Surgery. In his years of practice he served, at various times, as Associate Chief of Orthopaedics at the Hospital of St. Raphael, Chief of Orthopaedics at the VA Hospital, West Haven, and the President of the Yale Orthopaedic Association; the latter is an organization which devotes itself to the education of orthopaedic residents. During his active life his professional interest came to focus on adult hip and spine surgery and his hobbies on flying, tennis, bird hunting and dog training.
Funeral services will be private and a memorial celebration will be scheduled for a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Yale Orthopaedic Association, c/o Department of Orthopaedics, 800 Howard Ave, New Haven, CT 06520.
