Sonya "Sonny" Gale nee Wells of North Haven, CT. and Jupiter Florida, died peacefully on February 10th at the age of 86. Sonny is survived by her husband Gerald Gale, children Eva Mathieu and her husband Mark, Steven Gale and his wife Elisa and her two grandchildren Rachael and Shane Mathieu, extended family and many dear friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, May and Nathan Wells of Teaneck New Jersey and her siblings, Pearl Fierman, Jerome Wells and Maurice Wells. Sonny was born on February 21st , 1930 in Bronx, New York to May and Nathan Wells. She grew up in Teaneck New Jersey until her marriage and return to New York City in 1950. Sonny attended the Latin American Institute where she was trained as a bilingual executive secretary. After moving to Connecticut, Sonny began her most cherished career as a mother, raising Eva and Steven. She considered her most precious gifts her family and her grandchildren later in life. Sonny fell in love with the custard boy she met on the boardwalk while vacationing in Far Rockaway. Her commitment and love for her darling Jerry was unparalleled and they were able to celebrate 66 years of bliss on September 10th of this year. Sonny reveled in the small wonders of nature; a floral scented breeze, a bird in flight, the lull of the ocean's roar and an autumn blanketed in leaves. She was also a consummate cook who nourished many a soul, a voracious reader, who, until dementia silently crept in and stole her ability to attend to the written word, was engaged in so many cultural joys. Most importantly, she was a beacon of light to anyone who ever stumbled along the way on their perspective journeys.
Funeral service at the Congregation Mishkan Israel, 785 Ridge Rd., Hamden, CT, Tuesday at 11:am. with a reception to follow. The interment in the Mishkan Israel Cemetery will be for immediate family only.
